Job growth

  • Finance professionals are more optimistic this year than in 2013, but remain more pessimistic than the industry average. 36% expect their workforce to increase (up from 29% in 2013), compared with the cross-industry average of 43%.

Compensation

  • 4.1.1.gifFinance professionals are more optimistic about their organisation’s ability to pay salary increases in 2014 (72% compared to the industry average of 67%). This has also risen from 64% in 2013, showing increased optimism in the market.
  • There is no change regarding bonuses, the vast majority expect them (61%). 71% of large companies (£150+ turnover) expect to pay bonuses in 2104, compared to just 55% of companies with revenue of less than £150m.

The retention gap

  • 4.1.2.gifOrganisations still have issues with staff retention; the majority of employers (55%) don’t think their organisation does enough to retain its top talent.
  • Employers rank an open communication strategy as the most important contributor of a positive working environment, followed by promotion opportunities and salary increases as second and third.
  • Almost double the number of employers think open communication is more important than promotion opportunities. However, when asked why they lose talent, few opportunities for career progression and salaries being below market rate are ranked the top two reasons that employees leave. Finance professionals are more likely to leave than other professionals for these reasons (71% versus 66% and 49% versus 46% respectively).

Skills

  • Last year, the majority of employers across all specialisms (31%) thought relevant work experience in their sector was the quality most lacking in job seekers. This year it has shifted markedly to ‘the right attitude to work’ (up to 36% from 25% in 2013).
  • Good news for finance candidates; work experience in your sector is less important to finance employers (16% compared to 22% average). Adding experiences from different sectors and company types is one way to show that you do have the right attitude towards your career; take advantage of moving industries and company as it shows you can apply yourself.
  • Part qualified accountants who support their qualifications with the right attitude and good experience are in short supply and therefore highly employable. Finance employers need to be competitive when recruiting such candidates.

Gender diversity

  • 4.1.3.gifIn general, the majority of females think more women are needed in all areas of the business to improve gender diversity (39%), though almost as many think gender diversity is good in their organisation (34%).
  • Finance professionals are more positive; 44% saying gender diversity in their organisation is good.
  • Finance professionals are less concerned with the proportion of females at boardroom level (12% think this area is a focus, compared to 17% on average).
