New to the UK?

If you’ve recently arrived in the UK, we at Page Personnel Secretarial would like to start by saying… welcome! There are some truly unique opportunities for secretarial and office support staff out there at the moment - and we're the people to talk to when you’re ready to grab those opportunities with both hands.

We realise that when you move to a new country, getting a job is only part of the picture. Finding a place to live, registering with a Doctor, obtaining a National Insurance number - it can all be quite daunting when everything’s unfamiliar. That’s why we put together this section, providing all the information you need on:

  • Visas
  • Accommodation
  • Obtaining your NI number
  • Setting up a bank account
  • Tax in the UK
  • Medical assistance
  • Useful numbers and websites

Visas

The two year working holiday visa (WHV) entitles foreign nationals to work in the UK for 52 weeks. You must log every assignment with us, keeping a tally of days worked – one day is counted as a week worked and is deducted from your total.

Accommodation

Most rental properties in the UK are let furnished and include all the basics you need to set up house. Apart from your monthly rent you will need to budget for additional expenses including utilities, council tax and a TV licence.

If you are looking to rent, our global opportunities team has partnered up with a number of excellent estate agencies - your Page Personnel Secretarial consultant will be happy to act as intermediary to find you the best possible accommodation.

If you don't want to use an agency, you can try Loot, TNT or Gumtree, all of which are fantastic online resources for flat hunters. If you don’t have a reference from a previous landlord, our Global Opportunities Team can help you with that as well.

Obtaining a National Insurance number

Your National Insurance (NI) number is used by employers to identify you for tax purposes. It also guarantees your eligibility for free medical care.

Our payroll department will give you a temporary NI number for your first assignment. The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) will issue your permanent NI number – should they require a letter of reference, your consultant will be happy to oblige.

Setting up a bank account

We recommend setting up a bank account before you start your first assignment, to guarantee prompt payment. Our Global Opportunities team has well established links with HSBC and would be happy to send them a letter of introduction on your behalf. You will still need to provide the following documentation before you can get set up:

  • Passport.
  • An original statement from your bank at home.
  • Proof of address – a utility bill will suffice.

Tax in the UK

PAYE is the system whereby income tax is automatically deducted from wages on behalf of the Inland Revenue. If you’re PAYE registered, Page Personnel Secretarial will deduct your tax and NI at source.

If you've previously worked in the UK please enclose your P45 with your first timesheet. Otherwise you will need to fill out a P46, available from the Payroll Department at Page Personnel.
