About Our Client

My client is a well recognised brand on the UK high street with several business units.

Job Description

  • Be responsible for thoroughly reviewing the quarterly vat returns, carrying out detailed checks and comparisons to previous quarters. Ensure that the vat return is submitted on time. Prepare the sales reconciliation to the vat return to ensure that the vat return is complete and includes all output and input vat. The vat return is prepared by the Assistant Financial and Tax Accountant.
  • Review the VAT return on a monthly basis to ensure that any issues are addressed and resolved before the end of the vat quarter. Ensure that VAT is calculated in accordance with the agreed Retail Scheme and the rules governing the specialist trading areas e.g. Energy, Pharmacy and Travel.
  • Review the vat reconciliation on a monthly basis, check the validity of the postings and make any necessary amendments. Review the automatic retail VAT provision and ensure that there is adequate provision.
  • Set up a system to collect additional information required to make additional legitimate claims and reduce output tax where the in house specialist systems do not collect the necessary information.
  • Review the vat processes and procedures in the group's business streams on a rolling programme to ensure that the correct vat is being charged/claimed and recorded.
  • Document and implement vat processes and controls within the trading groups and central functions including Purchase Ledger, Banking and Sales invoicing.
  • Regularly check adherence to the vat processes and controls in the trading groups and central functions.
  • Ensure that sales invoices are raised with vat unless approved by The Treasurer or Financial and Tax Accountant.
  • Ensure that the Partial Exemption method is being complied with and that the vat is being posted in accordance with the method approved by HMRC. Prepare the Partial Exemption calculations on a quarterly and annual basis.
  • Maintain the Capital Goods Scheme register and ensure all additions and disposals are correctly recorded. Also maintain a register of Opted to tax properties and complete the necessary paperwork to opt to tax properties when requested to opt to tax a property.
  • On a monthly basis Ensure that the VAT status of the products in the product file is correct and that new products and amendments are reviewed on a monthly basis. Food and Health Care.
  • Develop EPOS vat reporting for Retail on the new In Control system.
  • Collect the information on a monthly basis to prepare the multi-buy claims liaising with the Food Management Accountant and prepare the annual claim.
  • Calculate the year end annual adjustments for Food stock and leakage.
  • Prepare the vat return for the Travel Transport Company and ensure that it is fully vat compliant.
  • Review the processes and procedures that Travel use to set up vat provisions on TARSC and ensure that the processes and procedures provide the correct vat on Travel bookings.
  • Perform, review and reconcile the TOMS calculations using the new bespoke data warehouse system.
  • Keep up to date with current legislation and vat cases that may impact the Client.
  • Assist with HMRC audits and inspections.
  • Prepare HMRC vat voluntary disclosures where necessary.
  • Provide information requested by HMRC on queries and declarations
  • Assist the Financial and Tax Accountant with the Corporation Tax returns and subsidiaries' statutory accounts.
  • Ad hoc tasks and projects.
  • Take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work.

The Successful Applicant

Professional accountancy qualification, minimum AAT, studying for CIMA, ACCA or ACA.

At least 3 years experience of working in a Finance department.

Excellent IT skills, adaptable to learning new systems and interrogating information held in systems for robustness.
