Job Description

  • Develop and enhance the current generic VAT guidance to agreed priorities and timescales.
  • Manage information requests from HMRC audit teams and internal technical queries to ensure prompt and accurate responses. Work with tax teams and other colleagues to ensure that the data and information necessary to determine tax treatments is produced.
  • Where appropriate undertake quality assurance checks on HMRC determinations on issues arising from the audits. Challenge decisions directly with HMRC or escalate key issues to the Tax Business Partner along with suggested options.
  • Monitor and control responses to ad hoc tax queries. Allocate queries to appropriate tax specialists, including self and ensure accurate and timely, professional advice, support and guidance is provided. Ensure advice is supported by documented, well-reasoned and comprehensive analyses.
  • Undertake research on tax topics in order to produce guidance, responses to technical queries or input to strategic decision making.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of awareness and training materials
  • Manage tax projects being led by the Tax Advisory Team using recognised project management techniques.

The Successful Applicant


  • producing written guidance or reports
  • supporting non-specialists to understand technical issues
  • the applicability of VAT in a commercial organisation particularly as it relates to
  • the taxation of company cars and other staff travel expenses


  • VAT as it applies to Government Departments, including the Contracted Out Services regulations
  • VAT on land, education and research activities
  • developing arguments and producing cases to HMRC.
  • developing cost-effective policies and procedures to meet tax compliance obligations
  • computerised accounting systems
