Job Description

The Interim Trading and Commercial Accountant will be expected to perform the following tasks:

  1. Retail and Commercial Processes and Procedures (70%)
  • Working closely with the Trust's commercial managers and director of finance and resources (DoFR), draw up end to end financial procedures for the Trust's new retail and commercial activities.
  • Working with the Trust's commercial managers, establish systems to report stock, income and expenditure for retail and commercial projects.
  • Establish the year end processes for consolidation purposes.
  • Act as a focal point for technical inquirers regarding new retail and commercial activities.
  • Ensure the DoFR is kept informed of any salient issues and is briefed to the level required to be able to communicate relevant issues to the SMT, board and directors of the Trust's trading subsidiary.
  1. Budgets (5%)
  • Embed cash flow forecasting in the retail budget and reporting process.
  • Oversee banking arrangements for the trading subsidiary, ensuring cash flow is closely monitored.
  • Working with the commercial managers and other staff, provide forecasting and re-budgeting of the Trust's annual budget for retail and commercial operations.
  • Provide budget-holders with their results against targets.
  1. Reporting (10%)
  • Convene, report to, service and follow up the quarterly meetings of the Trust's trading subsidiary.
  • Prepare ad hoc reports for the directors of the Trust's trading subsidiary.
  • Oversee the trading subsidiary's chart of accounts and inter company processes and transfers.
  • Working with the Trust's management accountant, set, monitor and ensure adherence to a monthly production timetable.
  1. VAT / Other tax (10%)
  • Update procedure guides and prepare VAT returns for the Trust's trading subsidiary
  • Working with the commercial managers, provide advice on tax efficient ways to structure retail and commercial operations.
  • Work with the DoFR to manage other Trust-wide taxation issues
  1. Projects (5%)
  • Regularly review financial procedure guides
  • Attend meetings of the Visitor Enterprise Group
  • Assist commercial managers with ad hoc projects for example selecting till systems or payment card readers for use in retail operations.

The Successful Applicant

The successful Interim Trading and Commercial Accountant will have the following:

  • Worked for a charity with trading subsidiary.
  • Either helped set up a trading subsidiary or played a key role managing one.
  • Understands VAT process for charities.
  • Confident about writing up procedures.
  • Able to start asap.
