How to improve your interview technique
Interview technique is a critical skill that you need to master if you are to make the most of your talents and get that job.
Once you have obtained an interview be confident that on paper you measure up. Now you need to impress in person.
Interview tips
- Research the organization. There is plenty of information available on the website. Find out some facts about the organization; e.g. number of employees, its products and services, main competitors and so on.
- Familiarise yourself with the job spec and know your C.V. back to front. During the interview, you’ll be trying to show how your previous experience makes you eligible for the role on offer.
- First impressions are important. Be smart, punctual and give a warm handshake and do make regular eye contact when speaking – but don’t stare.
- Be prepared for competency-based questions that try to access your skills. They work on the principle that “Past performance is the best predictor of future performance”. Therefore, use examples that illustrate what a good job you have previously done.
- During the interview project “trustworthiness”: the interviewer will want to be able to trust their future employee. Therefore, try to establish some rapport, listen to the anecdotes and try to find areas in common at the level of work, and use stories that demonstrate your best qualities.
- Be courteous to everyone you meet from the receptionist to the interviewer themselves but don’t be afraid to say what you think, if asked.
- At the end of the interview, ensure you know how the process will proceed. It is important to convey enthusiasm and friendliness even at the end of the most gruelling interview.
