Choose your HR career path

HR professionals may be faced with a decision as to whether or not they should specialise. Page Personnel has outlined a number if factors to help you make that decision.

Are you bored easily?

If you’re someone who needs constant stimulation and enjoys tackling a variety of tasks, you may be more suited to a generalist HR career. Every day is different and as a general HR practitioner, you need to have a flexible approach to deal with your workload; you might start the day working on a pensions package, only to be interrupted by a director wanting to draw up a contract for a new employee.

Do you have an eye for detail?

HR specialists focus their energies on one aspect of HR, conducting research and keeping up to date with how changes in procedure and the law effect that area. They are highly focused professionals who enjoy having their expertise recognised by colleagues and management.

In brief

Remember, if you choose to be a specialist, you will have to show dedication to become an expert in your chosen field. If you pursue an HR career with a broad remit, your ability to adapt will be paramount.
