Getting into... Secretarial role
Making a break into a new career is not easy. But it isn’t impossible either!
What is Secretarial?
Often called the ‘eyes and ears of a company’, people that work as a secretary for example, provide assistance to a manager, network of managers or a team of people. As well as being in charge of office procedures, people may also take on projects and possible oversee junior staff. Typical work tasks would include copy-typing, word processing, dealing with telephone and email queries and diary management. Roles are very much dependant on the organisation and who the individual will be providing support to.
What qualifications do I need?
You don’t need any particular qualification to get a secretarial job. Most companies will ask for GCSE’s and equivalent and possibly HND’s. There are many colleges and study centres that offer training courses so if your skills are rusty it may be worth brushing up on a few skills. Pitman Training courses are industry recognised. It may be worth seeing if they offer you any courses that will help you develop your skill set.

What skills will I need to demonstrate?
- Good organisational skills
- Good oral and written communication skills
- A confident and personable phone manner
- Skills to manage your own work load
- An understanding of generic computer systems – skill level depending on each role
- Honesty and discretion – you may hear things in an organisation first due to the nature of your role however some of this may be highly sensitive and personal
- Time management, not just for yourself but possibly for your boss
- Team work
- Dealing with stress and pressure
- Handling individual projects alongside your work load?
