Getting into... Human Resources
Making a break into a new career is not easy. But it isn’t impossible either!
What is Human Resources?
Within any business, someone will manage the issues surrounding personnel and individuals working at the organisation. This covers the hiring, firing, training, and other personnel issues. Human Resources (HR) will also look after working practices, pay, conditions of employment and diversity.
What qualifications do I need to work in HR?
There is no right or no wrong way to break into the world of HR. A degree is not essential but it may help in certain cases. Any relevant HND may also help. Starting in an administrative role within a HR department will also give you a good starting point to work your way up through the ranks.
The recognised HR qualification is the certificate from the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD). This may be something you want to work towards in the long term although some people decide to enter the scheme independently.
What skills will I need to demonstrate?
- Good interpersonal skills – potentially you will be working with people from all levels of the organisation
- Good organisation
- Basic IT and numeracy skills – although some organisations use certain systems which may require a higher degree of understanding
- The potential to understand employment policy such as legal frameworks, regulations etc
- Discretion and integrity – you may be working with some sensitive personnel cases and will have access to private information
These are all the basic skills we can suggest however some job descriptions will be more detailed so speak to your Page Personnel consultant for more advice. Click here to search our selection of Secretarial and Office Support roles.
