Dress for success at work, tips and advice

Dress for success

Congratulations, you’'ve got the job! Now you need to ensure you project the right image by dressing for success.

Dress codes obviously vary from company to company, even for departments within a company the code may be very different – depending whether you’re client facing or a member of the support staff.

However, as a rule of thumb investment banks and lawyers tend to be the most formal, with creative ad agencies and internet-based companies being the most informal.

Still, it is important to check out the company dress code before you arrive for work.

Of course, the whole ‘dress down Friday’ phenomenon has complicated matters. However often, particularly in most investment banks and law firms, one uniform has merely been replaced by another: with everyone wearing the same colours and branded shirts, jumpers and trousers.

Remember though: codes are not laws and, within any set of guidelines, it is still possible to project a little bit of style, individuality and class.

Below are some tips to ensure that your sartorial style is second to none as you dress for success.

General Tips

  • If you have any visible body parts pierced, remove all jewellery, including earrings.
  • Be well groomed, even if the dress code is casual you don’t want to give the impression of being slovenly.
  • Choose your colours carefully.
  • Sort out some outfits before you start. Discard any ill-fitting ones and ensure clothes are spotless and shirts ironed.
