Don’t send out that CV to employers

It may sound crazy but if you want to get that dream job don’t send out your CV: at least, not in a mindless way to a prospective employer. Instead, only use it as a generic marketing tool for recruitment agencies. A good agency will then help tailor your CV to specific jobs.

Waste paper bins around the world are full of standard CVs, given as little respect by their intended recipient as junk mail. The standard CV sent unexpectedly stands very little chance of finding the actual person making the hiring decision. Even if it does, it is unlikely to make much impact, as it will be too general.

It is much more effective if you first speak to people at your target company and learn who is hiring and what their specific requirements are. Then you can follow up this call with a carefully targeted CV that meets the main criteria that the person seeking to hire actually wants.

Page Personnel’s CV service

At Page Personnel our Consultants can offer a specialised service, helping you tailor your CV so that your relevant experience is clearly communicated when applying for a role.

A crafted CV should demonstrate how your skills and experience match the specific job spec to which you are applying. This may necessitate only take a few tweaks but will make a world of difference when reviewed by the prospective employer.

For those of you less familiar with the standard CV rules here are a few:

Tips

  • When dealing with agency feedback listen to advice from your consultant with a critical but sympathetic ear. Advice is cheap but good advice can really help you sharpen up your sales act. At the end of the day that is what you are doing: selling yourself.
  • Your CV should be laser printed in black ink using a plain typeface, on good quality A4 white/cream paper. Decorative borders are not necessary, nor are photographs of you.
  • Remember: a potential employer will use your CV to inform interview questions. It should be clear and easy to read. Explain gaps in career history and falsehoods and inaccuracies avoided.
  • A specially tailored covering letter should always accompany your CV
Your CV should ideally be no longer than two pages and never more than three. Content should be clear, structured, concise and relevant.

Good luck with your job hunt!
